The Investigative Process

Introduction.

We commence every investigation with open minds. We are not classical skeptics, our only interest is finding factual, objective, evidence which either categorically proves claims of paranormal phenomena or provides a clear alternative explanation. Either way, we have no preconceptions, and our only objective is to ascertain the truth.

The process outlined below lists many procedures, some of which may be included or excluded dependent upon the circumstances of the specific case. Our methodology is to gather as much quantifiable data as possible during the on-site survey, then analyze the data in our offices during the subsequent days or weeks. If anomalous data is acquired, we may request to conduct a second, targeted, on-site survey.

The interviews.

We conduct telephonic and in-person interviews to reveal as much background information as possible before beginning the actual field work.

Sensor package deployment.

We deploy computer-controlled sensor packages into "hot zones" within the survey area to gather data continuously during the investigation. These sensor packages detect and record minute changes in ultra-violet energy (A & B), visible light, infra-red light, temperature, nuclear radiation (alpha, beta, and gamma), electromagnetic fields, electrostatic fields, barometric pressure, atmospheric ionization, and sound waves (audible and ultrasonic). We also use portable sensors to extend the search area and provide backup verification of fixed sensor readings.

Accelerometer package deployment.

In the event tremors or vibrations are felt in chairs, tables, beds, or other objects, we deploy recording three-axis accelerometers to measure the force and frequency of movement.

Extensive video recording.

We deploy low-light (0.0003 lux) and zero-light (0 lux) cameras throughout the areas included in the survey to provide recorded visual evidence of any phenomena.

Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) recording.

We deploy recorders throughout the survey area, which utilize both electret condensor and dynamic microphones. Although virtually every modern voice recording device today uses an electret condensor microphone, we also include dynamic microphones. Electronic Voice Phenomena are widely believed be caused by paranormal generation of an electromagnetic (EM) field which is not audible to the human ear. Electret condensor microphones are not sensitive to EM fields, but dynamic microphones are highly sensitive to EM, and can more accurately reproduce information carried by such a field.

Photographic and video recording in infra-red and visible light.

We employ professional still and video cameras, to detect and identify the infra-red energy emitted by many paranormal phenomena, as well as any activity in the visible light spectrum.

Thermal imaging.

We deploy a sensitive handheld thermal imaging system which provides a visual "picture" of objects, people, or animals in an area based upon their temperature. This can be very revealing when tracking phenomena which differ in temperature from their surroundings.

Radio spectrum analysis.

These analyses are conducted for the detection of radio or microwave emissions which could be a source of visual or auditory experiences. To conduct the radio spectrum analysis we use laboratory-grade spectrum analyzers, which detect energy from VLF into the millimeter wave frequency range.

Physical inspection.

If any object or objects are believed to exhibit paranormal activity, such as moving, humming, jumping, etc., we will examine those objects with a real-time portable x-ray, a magnetometer, and a high-intensity ultraviolet light to  determine whether there is any alternative explanation for the activity.

Analysis of property and environs.

We evaluate the physical location, first by walking the neighborhood, then using maps, survey tools, and satellite imagery, to determine whether there is any possibility of a physical structure, power line EM field, radio emissions, etc., contributing to the activity.

Historical review.

We conduct a historical review of the property, using public records, news archives, and other sources, to determine the history of a property, and any past events which could contribute to paranormal activity.

Final analysis and report.

Upon completion of the survey, we conduct an exhaustive analysis of the data obtained. We then provide a  comprehensive report of our findings, with either confirmation of paranormal activity or alternative explanations for the experienced activity.
